Chapter 3: The New Kid in Town
The moving truck rumbled to a stop in front of a two-story house with a wraparound porch, paint peeling slightly in the late summer heat. Dexter Maxwell stared out the window, his stomach churning with a mix of anxiety and dread.
"Well, this is it, Dex. Waterfall Creek. Population: small, but friendly." Marcus, Dexter's dad, turned off the ignition and gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Ready for a fresh start?"
"Yeah, I guess." Dexter shrugged, avoiding eye contact. He wasn't sure what he was ready for, except maybe to disappear into his phone and forget that his entire life had just been uprooted.
"Come on," Marcus said, opening his door. "Let's check out the place."
The house had a musty smell, like old books and forgotten dreams. Dexter trailed behind his dad, his eyes scanning the faded wallpaper and dusty furniture.
"It needs a little work," Marcus admitted, running a hand through his salt-and-pepper hair. "But it's got potential. And it's close to everything. The school's just a short bike ride away. You'll see the bridge on your way there — it's kinda hard to miss. Leads right up to that mountain where the Research Center is. Whole town's talking about the stuff they're working on up there."
Dexter nodded, not really listening. He was more interested in the old lighthouse he'd glimpsed from the highway. It stood on a rocky outcropping overlooking the ocean, a lonely sentinel against the crashing waves.
"Think we can check out the lighthouse later?" Dexter asked, a flicker of curiosity igniting in his usually stoic eyes.

"Sure, Dex. We've got time." Marcus smiled. "We can even grab some pizza at that place by the mall. I hear they have the best pepperoni in town."
Dexter spent the rest of the day unpacking boxes and setting up his computer, a sanctuary of blinking lights and familiar code in a world that felt increasingly alien. As he assembled his keyboard, he could hear his dad on the phone, his voice low and serious.

"Hey, Henry... Yeah, we made it. The place is... well, it's a fixer-upper. But it's got good bones... Yeah, I know, about the shop... I'm thinking about it. But I just got here. I need some time to figure things out."
Later that evening, Dexter and Marcus drove towards Waterfall Creek Academy. The town was small, with quaint shops and tree-lined streets. As they crossed the bridge, Dexter could see the Mountaintop Research Center perched on the hillside, a sprawling complex of modern buildings that seemed to hum with an unseen energy.
"Whoa," Dexter muttered, impressed despite himself. "That place is huge."
"Yeah," Marcus said, a thoughtful look on his face. "I might end up doing some consulting work for them. They're always looking for engineers with my kind of expertise."
Just then, a flash of movement caught Dexter's eye. A pink blur lay sprawled on the sidewalk. It was a girl and her pink bicycle. Dexter could see her pink backpack, decorated with butterflies, lying open next to her, school supplies scattered on the pavement. A ginger cat darted across the road, chased by a barking dog.
"Oh, man, are you okay?" Marcus pulled over quickly, jumping out to help the girl.
"I'm fine," the girl said, her voice shaky. She sat up, unbuckling her helmet to reveal short, curly hair styled in pigtails with pink ribbons. "Just a little scraped up. That cat came out of nowhere." She winced as she tried to put weight on her ankle.
"Here, let me help you," Dexter said, reaching out to steady her. Up close, he noticed her warm brown eyes and the faint scent of cinnamon.
She hesitated, her gaze flickering to the Waterfall Creek Academy blazer Dexter wore. "Thanks," she finally said, accepting his help. "I'm Tracy."
"Dexter," he replied, his cheeks flushing slightly.
"It looks like a sprain," Marcus said, examining Tracy's ankle. "We're heading to the school. We can give you a ride. The nurse can have a look at it."
"Thanks so much," Tracy said. "I'd appreciate that."
At the school, as Dexter helped Tracy out of the truck, a figure rushed toward them, his expression a mix of concern and relief.

"OMG, what happened, Tracy?" A boy with dark hair and concerned eyes hurried over, gently pushing Dexter aside to help Tracy. "Are you okay, Trixy?"
"Thanks, Dex," Tracy smiled at Dexter before turning to the other boy. "My leg's not broken, Aki. It's just a small sprain."
"Let me help you to the nurse," Akihiko said, carefully taking Tracy's arm. Dexter watched them walk away, a strange mix of disappointment and curiosity swirling inside him.
As he walked into the school, a commotion erupted in the hallway. A group of students were gathered around a trash can overflowing with brightly colored packing peanuts. In the middle of the chaos stood Finn, a mischievous grin on his face.
"Welcome to Waterfall Creek, new kid!" He called out to Dexter, giving him a playful salute. "Hope you like surprises!"
Dexter shook his head, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. This town was definitely...different. And for the first time since moving, a flicker of hope warmed the chill of his apprehension.
